Would You Mind If a Guest Came to Your Child’s Birthday Party Without a Gift?

One birthday party question brought out very different opinions—and a reminder that people matter more than presents.
For my first Confetti Conversations, I asked: What would you do if someone showed up to your child’s birthday party empty-handed?
The responses made it clear that people see this differently.
Some parents said they would be happy the guest came to celebrate. They want their children to value someone’s presence and kindness as much as a present. A gift might be enjoyed for a little while, they pointed out, but the time spent together can mean much more.
Others said they would welcome the guest and give them grace. We don’t always know what someone else is dealing with financially, and buying a gift could make things harder for their household. One parent shared that their family waited until guests had left to open presents, so no one would feel uncomfortable.
And then there was another perspective: some people would feel bothered if a guest arrived without a gift, unless the family had talked about it beforehand. For them, arriving empty-handed goes against the way they were taught to show up for a celebration.
I can understand why this question brings up strong feelings. A birthday party is a celebration for the child, but it also brings together families with different budgets, expectations, and experiences. A host may be thinking about the time and effort they put into the party. A guest may be doing their best just to be there.

So what’s a kind way to handle it?
If you’re hosting, welcome your guests and avoid calling attention to who brought a gift. If you’re concerned that someone may feel uncomfortable, you can open presents after the party. And if gifts aren’t expected, saying so on the invitation can help everyone feel at ease.
If you’re invited and can’t afford a present, showing up with love still matters. A heartfelt card, a kind note, or simply celebrating the child can be meaningful. You don’t have to explain your finances to the whole room.
There may not be one answer that feels right for every family. But this conversation reminded me that we can hold our own expectations while still leaving room for kindness.
